Frequently Asked Questions
Can my hair handle a perm?
Not all hair types can handle perms. Some hair types end up more damaged than others. Much depends on the condition of your hair to start with and whether any other processing has been done before the perm, such as colour or foils. If you have fine or brittle hair, a perm may not be the best idea.
How do I prepare for my hair appointment?
Wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo and do not use conditioner or any other styling products prior to perming.
Will a perm affect the overall health of my hair?
Yes, perming does increase dryness and the chance of damage.
Is there anything I should avoid doing immediately after a perm?
It is important not to pull on the curl or stress the hair until the perm has settled. This may take up to a week. Avoid straightening or pulling during blow-drying, as this will cause the curl to relax or drop.
How long will my perm last?
This depends on the length of your hair, how strong or tight your perm is and how often you have it cut. Maintenance trims are recommended every six weeks. Most people get about three months out of their perms.
Can I colour or highlight my hair after a perm?
While it’s not impossible, you should allow a couple of weeks between the perm and any additional service. That said, combining other services with a perm isn’t advisable, as it causes further dryness and damage to your hair.
What is the aftercare regime for my perm?
Wait at least five days before wetting or washing your hair. Avoid using a brush or comb in the first 24 hours—instead, use your fingers to scrunch or a wide-toothed comb to fluff and lift. The less pull and drag on your curl, the better. Don’t colour your hair for two weeks after the perm (if you colour before the perm, it may strip the colour). Use the shampoo, conditioner, treatments and styling products recommended by your stylist. Trim your hair every four to six weeks.
