Experience, Patience & Precision

Blonde colouring takes experience, patience and precision—our blonde foils are designed with all three. At Amore 'D' Hair Studio, we take time to get it right, starting with a one-on-one consultation to discuss the tone you’re after and the path to get there.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Should I wash my hair before a blonding or foils service?

If it has only been a few days since you last washed your hair, then it is not necessary. However, if your hair is very dirty or greasy, it’s best to wash it first. It’s important that the hair is free of product or product buildup. If you tend to use a lot of hair products, it’s best to wash your hair with a clarifying shampoo prior to your blonding or foiling service.

  • Should I bring inspiration pictures with me to my appointment to help convey the kind of blonde I am looking for?

Yes, inspiration pictures are always helpful in communicating the kind of blonde and blonde coverage you are looking for.

  • What is considered or described as a cool blonde?

Cool blondes are icy, ash/grey and pearl in tone. It’s important to note that depending on your natural hair colour (or if you’ve been colouring your hair dark), it may take a few visits to achieve, as all warmth must be removed from the hair. This type of blonding is more damaging due to the need to turn your natural colour as light as possible.

  • What is considered or described as a warm blonde?

Warm blondes are buttery, honey, golden or caramel toned.

  • How do I know which tone of blonde suits me?

If your skin tone has pink, blue or red undertones, cooler blondes will suit you best. If your skin has gold, peach or yellow undertones, warmer blondes will be more flattering. If you're unsure about cool or warm tones, there’s a neutral option known as cool-warm. These tones include sandy beige, creamy or wheat blondes. This is often achieved through a balanced combination of light/platinum blonde highlights mixed with slightly warmer lowlights at a neutral level, creating a natural blend of tones.

  • Is blonding/foiling damaging to my hair?

Going lighter does involve damage to the hair. The degree depends on factors such as your hair's condition, whether your hair is already coloured and how well you follow your aftercare regime. If your hair is naturally dark or has been coloured darker, it will take time and multiple sessions to achieve your desired blonde. You may have to live with an in-between colour for a few weeks. Darker hair lifts warmer, so you might go through those levels to get to your goal. Everyone’s lightening process is different, depending on hair history and texture.

  • Why does my blonde turn brassy?

First, let’s define brassy. Brassy means orange—think bronze, copper or gold tones, all very warm. Yellow is more like the inside of a banana. The tone your blonde turns depends on your natural base colour and how light it lifted. Only very light blondes reflect yellow; anything darker tends to reflect orange. To eliminate brassy tones, you either need to tone the hair or lift it further during the blonding process. Water can also contribute to fading and brassiness. Invest in a shower filter. All blondes will turn yellow or brassy at some point.

  • What should my hair care regime look like?

Use a prescriptive shampoo and conditioner recommended by your stylist. It’s best to wait about three days before washing your hair after colouring. Avoid daily blow-drying or straightening, as this will damage the hair. Always use heat protection products when using a hair dryer or heated styling tools. Protect your hair from sun exposure by wearing a hat, and from salt or chlorine when swimming. If you swim often, rinse your hair thoroughly to remove salt or chlorine, then condition after each session. Use a weekly prescriptive repair or hydrating treatment or mask on your hair.
